USA Swimming: Introduction to Competitive Swimming
Due to King County restrictions, we are not able to offer our Intro program at the King County Pool during the Summer. Please contact the club for more information.

Ages: 5 years and over
 
Class Structure:
Up to 7 swimmers per class
 



Description:
This practice is for novice swimmers age 5 and up, who would like to learn to swim with good form. The team's professional, nationally accredited coaches create a safe, fun learning environment to introduce pre-competitive swimmers to the exciting world of swimming.

Upon enrollment, each swimmer also joins, and is supported by, USA Swimming - the sport's national governing body. USA Swimming's vision is "To inspire and enable our members to achieve excellence in the sport of swimming and in life."

Early registration is recommended as class sizes are limited. Once the classes are fully subscibed swimmers will be placed on a waiting list with the club.

Equipment:

  • Swim Suit (Not board shorts or bikinis)
  • Goggles that fit
  • VAC Swim Cap - supplied by the club

Entry:

  • Comfortable in the water
  • Able to blow bubbles underwater
  • Able to jump into the water and get to the side unassisted
  • Able to swim 10 yards - any stroke
  • Can listen & follow directions without being disruptive



Objectives:

  • Streamlining, Balance and breathing
  • Introduction to drills for Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly
  • Freestyle with side breathing for 40 yards
  • Circle swimming
  • Introduction to the clock
  • Introduction to starts and turns
  • Off-island practice for block starts
  • Introduction to relays
  • Feeling like part of the team
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Individual Responsibility

Swim Meets:
This is a pre-competitive level, however swimmers are offered the opportunity to experience a meet at the end of the session; it is not a requirement. Please discuss the option with the coach if your swimmer is interested.



Advancement:
Swimmers should be able to do the following:

  • Push off and streamline to the flags
  • Swim 20 yards of each backstroke and freestyle without stopping
  • Use an open turn correctly
  • Kick 2 x 20yds on 40 seconds
  • Use the clock to leave on top, 5 secs apart
  • Listen and follow instructions without being disruptive or distracting other swimmers.
