What Should I Know?
A parent simply must be the lead advocate for their children when it comes to safety issues. Learning to swim is just one layer of protection. Parents should learn as much as they can about the other layers of protection that can provide safety for their child.
To assure you are choosing the best swim program for your child, please look for the following:
- You should have the opportunity to interview the program director.
- There should be a progressive swim curriculum in place and a way to evaluate the program.
- Make sure the teaching ratio meets guidelines for the safety of your child usually 1 instructor for no more than 6 children.
- Swim instructors should have at least 30 hours of swim instructor training.
- All swim instructors should be trained in CPR, first aid and water safety skills.
Swimming lessons should include a range of activities that promote swimming and water safety, including fun play and games, water safety education, skill promotion, stroke development, ongoing evaluation and parent education.
